Post subject: Scripting Icons on Desktop (Panther)
Archived from groups: alt>comp>lang>applescript (more info?)

Hi, new to OSX and want to reproduce a script I had for OS9 that moved
all icons on desktop into several rows center-right of screen then
re-positioned them in specific places around the screen - any left in
the center were obviously new files/folders...

I can't even begin to understand the new finder scripting info of
position and bounds which seems not to relate to position (or bounds) on
the desktop
eg position:{475, 32}, bounds:{443, 0, 507, 64} is the same wherever the
icon is on the desktop.

And it is also unrecordable (a cheat I often use to help me get
started!!)

The only real reason to want this to work is that the icon "grid" for
the desktop is horribly loose - I liked the tight settings on my G4.
Changing icon size doesnt change the "tightness" - and I can't find it
in help - am I missing something fundamental?!!

Thanks for any help.

That's because these values refer to the position in the Desktop window
(the one you get when opening the folder named "Desktop" inside your
home folder) and not to the positions on the desktop. AFAIK, the
positions of the icons on the desktop is not accessible via AppleScript.

A great pity.
Thanks Patrick.

I guess a separate utility is now needed to do this (fix desktop icon
positions) - anyone know of one?

Thanks
